Broomfield

Broomfield is named after “broomcorn” which was grown in the area for many years before the city was founded. Broomcorn is a type of sorghum, a grain used for many purposes. It was called broomcorn because, you guessed it, it was actually grown to make brooms as well as for the grain. The location of the city is centered on a farm founded in the mid-1800s, which became a rail depot in the 1880s to ship grain to Denver for Zang beers, making Broomfield one of many Colorado cities that beer built.

Westminster

If Broomfield was a city that beer built, Westminster is a city that water built. Named after the Presbyterian Westminster University, the suburb has always been a visible feature of the Adams County landscape. Early growth was spurred by the presence of water resources in the form of the DeSpain Irrigation Ditch, the Farmers High Line Canal, and a water tower on Lowell Boulevard. Since then, the city has experienced numerous moments of crisis to maintain its water supply, and continues to be represented visually by its water towers.

Thornton

Thornton is different from many other cities in Colorado because it doesn’t have a long history. It’s an almost completely commercial venture, founded in the mid-1900s by developer Sam Hoffman. Hoffman made sure to pack the city’s debut with plenty of star power, naming the city after the current governor, Dan Thornton, and bringing in hot property Jane Russell for the city’s opening. Russell not only lent her name to the curvaceous Russell Boulevard in the center of town, she also decorated the city’s first two show homes.
